چکیده

015504-1 The shear wave speed is an upper limit for the speed of cracks loaded in tension in linear elastic solids. We have discovered that in a nonlinear material, cracks in tension (mode I) exceed this sound speed and travel in an intersonic range between shear and longitudinal wave speeds. The experiments are conducted in highly stretched sheets of rubber; intersonic cracks can be produced simply by popping a balloon.

Cracks faster than the shear wave speed

Classical dynamic fracture theories predict the surface wave speed to be the limiting speed for propagation of in-plane cracks in homogeneous, linear elastic materials subjected to remote loading. This report presents experimental evidence to the contrary. Intersonic shear-dominated crack growth featuring shear shock waves was observed along weak planes in a brittle polyester resin under far-fi...

Exterior Interface Cracks

Abstract-Continuing a recent investigation of interface cracks, attention is paid to the exterior crack. Two elastic solids bonded over a finite segment of their boundary and capable of transmitting shear and tensile tractions are considered. It is found that one of the edge cracks remains completely closed under shear alone, and opens gradually as the level of tension is increased. Both crack ...

A boundary element analysis of crack-propagation mechanism of micro-cracks in rock-like specimens under a uniform normal tension

In this work, the mechanism for fracture of brittle substances such as rocks under a uniform normal tension is considered. The oriented straight micro-cracks are mostly created in all the polycrystalline materials resulting from the stress concentrations. The present work focuses on the interactions of the pre-existing micro-cracks, which can grow and propagate within a rock-like specimen. The ...

Experimental Study on the Effect of Crumb Rubber on Shear Strength of Sandy Soil

Nowadays, soil reinforcement using polymer elements have been investigated by a number of researchers in order to increase the load capacity of soils. Reinforcing soils using fibers is a method of soil improvement, which offers a homogenous mixture in combination with soils, regarding their tensile strength. This combination maintains pressure loading capacity and properties in mutual resistant...

How fast can cracks propagate?

We have performed atomic simulations of crack propagation along a weak interface joining two harmonic crystals. The simulations show that a mode II shear dominated crack can accelerate to the Rayleigh wave speed and then nucleate an intersonic daughter that travels at the longitudinal wave speed. This contradicts the general belief that a crack can travel no faster than the Rayleigh speed.
